How to Invite Someone to a Discipleship Group

In this final video, Jamie models how to invite someone to accept the challenge of being intentionally discipled.

Here are some of the points Jamie makes:

I’d like to invite you into an authentic, life-on-life discipleship group where we can grow as a community of people who, together, are trying to be equipped to walk with Jesus and to learn how to pass that on to others as well.

If you accept this invitation, I want you to know that I take this commitment very seriously. I’m going to be equally committed to you. Because this is life-on-life, I’m inviting you to have unique access to my life.

I want to get to know you, your family, and your friends, and want you to get to know me and my family and friends.

You’ll see me fail and live dependent on God. You’ll see an authentic, Christian life on display.

It’s my goal to encourage you in your walk with the Lord, and to enter into this discipleship relationship with me and the other guys in the group so you can grow spiritually and be equipped to pass along to others what you’ve learned.

With the invitation, there’s also a challenge.

We all have limited time and lots of things that compete for our attention and energy. But growing in your relationship with the God of the Universe who is pursuing you is the most important thing you can be putting your time into.

It is worth your time and commitment to learn to model your life after Jesus—the most influential Man to have ever lived.

I’d like to invest in you through discipleship this year, but I don’t want to make assumptions about where you are in terms of this commitment.

I know this is just one of many places you can get plugged in to grow. If you are going to make this commitment, I ask that you treat this like your commitment to sport: Show up for “practice.” Come prepared. Don’t schedule other things during this time.

I want to help you grow in your Christ-like character and competency, but you’ll get out of this what you put into it. The other folks who’ll be part of this will be coming in with that same understanding.

This may not be the right time for you to make such a commitment. If you say, “No,” now, it won’t disqualify you in the future.

Our mission is to make disciples who make disciples so by the end of this, you should be equipped to lead a group just like this one.

I want you to take a day to think and pray about this. I’ll shoot you a text tomorrow and we can talk more about this. Sound good?

If you’ve been following Jesus for a while now as one of His disciples, the challenge to you is to step up to the plate and disciple others.
